Wellness & Preventative Care

Dogs and cats age much more quickly than we do, and the gradual onset of disease in seemingly healthy pets will often go unnoticed. When symptoms do appear, the condition may be difficult to treat and result in costly treatment. To avoid unnecessary cost and provide the best quality of life for your pet, we recommend regularly scheduled wellness exams–biannually for seniors, annually for everyone else. Ongoing dental care, vaccinations, fecal testing (to control parasites), exercise and a well-balanced diet are key factors in disease prevention.

Senior Care

Seniors, which include dogs and cats over seven years old, need extra care and today, more than ever, we’re able to make your pet’s golden years pain-free and joyful. Studies indicate that 20% of seniors have serious undetected medical conditions, which is why we offer a Senior Wellness Program comprising a physical exam twice a year as part of an early detection regimen to help sustain a high quality of life for your aging pet.

We use only the safest anesthesia and provide epidurals and other advanced forms of pain-relief medications for your pet’s comfort. We’ll call you immediately following surgery but you are certainly welcome to wait in our client comfort area during the procedure. You’re encouraged to visit during business hours while your pet is with us, and you can always call to check on your pet’s status with one of our nurses.

Acupuncture

Dr. Cogswell is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist with a certification from Colorado State University. She’s also a member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society.

This ancient modality can be very successful in treating animals for pain, arthritis, digestive problems, organ dysfunction and anxiety. Most pets lie down, yawn and really enjoy the treatment! The procedure is not more expensive than traditional medicine and can be an effective component of your pet’s medical care.

Radiology

We use the most advanced, state-of-the-art digital x-ray system to enable us to see inside your pet and better diagnose what’s going on. We also have board-certified radiologists available to review x-rays when necessary. Our well-trained and compassionate staff will carefully handle your pet during radiology procedures. You can even be sent home with a CD copy of your radiograph if you’d like.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless diagnostic tool for viewing the internal organs and evaluating function. It’s often better than x-rays for diagnosing many conditions. Swallowed foreign objects, tumors and diseases can be discovered without surgery.

Ultrasound can also help with early detection of pregnancy and facilitate fetal monitoring later in gestation.

What a week! Aurora Animal Hospital had two cases of owners trying to ease their dog’s osteoarthritis with pain relievers from their own medicine cabinets. That’s a big no-no in the veterinary world. I know it’s frustrating to not have a lot of options at home for your pet after a long run or exhausting [...]

Is your cat peeing outside the box?

I often feel the leading cause of death for a cat is peeing outside of the litter box. No one can tolerate the damage and smell for long, and sooner or later the culprit is put outside to fend for him or herself or lands in the shelter. Fortunately for everyone, most [...]
