A home care dental maintenance routine is the best way to prevent tartar and disease and reduce how frequently full dental cleanings will be needed. Just like you get your teeth cleaned at the dentist and then brush your teeth and floss regularly before your next cleaning, dogs and cats need regular care as well. Imagine how your teeth would like if you did no home oral care between dentist appointments! A dental cleaning only addresses past and current tartar and disease and does not prevent further tartar or disease from forming.
There are a number of oral health products available for dogs and cats to maintain dental health and prevent tartar accumulation that we recommend.
Brushing your pet’s teeth with a dog-safe enzymatic toothpaste like C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste at least twice weekly is the best way to maintain good oral health by reducing tartar and bad breath. Some dogs are great at allowing tooth brushing and others are a bit more resistant to it. It helps to offer the toothpaste as a treat initially and help pets get excited about it. C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste has chlorhexidine in it, which an animal safe alternative to fluoride. Both dogs and cats benefit from tooth brushing. Even just twice a week will have a big impact long term!
Dental chews like C.E.T. Veggidents, C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews, and Oravet Dental Hygeine Chews have the same enzyme as the toothpaste to help break down tartar throughout the mouth in addition to the chewing action to reduce tartar and maintain oral health. These are great options to use regularly for reducing tartar and bad breath!
C.E.T. Aquadent is a water additive to help reduce tartar buildup in dogs and cats. It is convenient to just add it to the water but some pets dislike the taste. The additive inactivates after 24 hours when added to water so the entire water source must be changed every 24 hours, so it is not a great option for the reservoir watering systems.
C.E.T. Intellident Cat Bites are a great treat option for cats to help with dental health! Add 3 treats to the food or as a standalone treat per day to reduce tartar and bad breath.
Hill’s t/d diet is specially formulated in kibble size and texture to reduce tartar and plaque buildup. The kibbles are larger than average to promote appropriate chewing to fully utilize the triple action fiber matrix and is the only diet approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). It can be fed exclusively or even added as a 20% component of the diet in addition to your pet’s regular food will still have good benefits.
